As a student advisor at the department of Biology between the years 2001 and 2010, Frans was well involved with the biology students here in Utrecht. Naturally, when one gets involved in students lives, one will become more involved with the student association, which wants to help students as much as possible. Frans was very helpful at activities regarding education and other sorts of UBV-activities, but he did not stop there. He is also very passionate about a small patch of nature at the University grounds, named the Driehoek (Triangle). A few years ago Frans became mentor of the Driehoek and still is now. He attends fieldwork days, especially when there is a lot to be done.
In 2013 Frans set up a new Biology in the field – course, named Careerpath for biologists. The course focuses on the future career choices students need to make and how to develop certain skills necessary flourishing after their studies. Unfortunately, Frans was not able to provide the students with the guidance he would have liked to give and therefore he handed over the task of coordinating the course. Still, Frans loves biology and keeps in touch through the Driehoek and as a member of merit.
