Arie Mink was the successor of Mr. Van Grevegoed as the building manager of ‘het Provisorium’ in 1985. ‘Het Provisorium’ was the building were Biology was housed back then. Later he became the building manager of the Prof. Dr. F.A.F.C. Wentbuilding. He is retired since 2014.
Arie Mink has meant a lot to the UBV. When he was the building manager of the Provisorium he first came in contact with the UBV. At this time, it was not going so well for the UBV.
In these hard times Arie always advised and helped the UBV. His saying was: “The biology is very important as it is, but it has one handicap, is doesn’t know how to sell itself”. In the year of 1986-1987 they made a big change. Instead of becoming a member of the UBV because of an ideology, all the first year students became almost automatically a member of the UBV from the moment they started studying Biology. It was beneficial for them because they would get discounts on their study books and activities.
This was not the only change that was implemented that year. Together with Arie some other ideas were also put into operation. The first UBV-sweater was produced and sold and the first ‘Almanak’ (yearbook) was made. They also set up a second hand microscope market to which you gained access by being a member of the UBV. These activities led to a growth of the UBV and her members.
In 1990 the department of Biology moved to the Prof. dr. F.A.F.C. Wentbuilding. Arie Mink was asked to become the building manager of this new location for Biology. Initially there wasn’t a place for the UBV in the Wentbuilding, and they would be separated from the rest of Biology. But when in 1990-1991 all the research groups changed buildings Arie once again saved the day. He was able to clear room Z103, previously an assistant room but now the new room for the UBV.
Everything that went on in the Went building during the last 20 years was consulted with Arie. With his cooperation there was little impossible. In 1994 the Went building was wrapped in a huge bow in honour of the 70th birthday of the UBV. Arie Mink also helped realise a play that was held at the pond in front of the went building in 2004 and it was with Arie’s help it was possible to organise all kinds of activities in and around the building.
